Note for New Users (Posting of Astrometry to the Blog)

Please note that astrometry of NEOCP objects should not be posted to the Blog. In addition, note that any astrometry that is sent to the list is not picked up for inclusion on the NEOCP or subsequent MPECs. Observations must be sent to the mpc@cfa address, with the appropriate observational header information. Submissions must [...]

It’s a terrible idea! Please don’t do that. (29%, 7 Votes)

Observer Removal of Non-Existant NEOCP Objects

Before today, the removal of NEOCP objects that do not exist has been handled manually. An observer sends an e-mail to mpc@cfa saying that “such and such an object” does not exist. A staff member then removes the object(s). Some significant time can elapse between the request being made and the object being removed.

E-mail Notification Issues

Dear NEOCP Blog subscribers,

This morning I upgraded the software that handles e-mail notifications and it seems to be causing trouble. I’ve tinkered around a bit, but we’ll have to wait until you guys start posting to see if anything is fixed.

One issue reported was that e-mails were coming in HTML when they [...]

New Digest2 Score Posting Criterion

Following feedback from the community we are changing the Digest2 score required for posting of new NEO candidates. It is currently set to 20%. This value is being changed, with immediate effect, to 50%.

E-mail Problems Solved

Dear NEOCP Blog users,

The e-mail problems we’ve been having over the past 24 hours should now be fixed. You should be receiving e-mail updates (if you’re subscribed to them) and should also be able to post via e-mail.

Let me know if there are any glitches tonight.

Clear skies to all!

Notice to Observers: Comments on Observing Strategies

Dear Observers,

The MPC would like to suggest a slightly different strategy for prioritizing NEOCP follow-up. While we in no way wish to discourage follow-up of NEOCP objects, it seems that observers are repeatedly targeting the objects with high NEO scores, rather than distributing the follow-up among the plethora of other available objects on [...]

Automated MPEC Preparation

Just a quick note to say that MPECs 2011-J08, -J09 and -J10 that have just been issued were the first MPECs to be prepared by a new automated procedure.  Astute readers (which should be everyone on this Blog) will have noticed that these MPECs were prepared by our unpaid, 24×365 staff member, A. U. [...]

Updated NEOCP news

This is a quick update on the new NEOCP page.  Non-functional samples (in that the cgi script isn’t in place yet) are now on-line at:

http://minorplanetcenter.net/iau/test/ToConfirm2.html  and

http://minorplanetcenter.net/iau/test/ToConfirmRA2.html

The main new features are that all objects are deselected by default and that there are two ways to request ephemerides:

1) Using the “all” button, [...]

MPC Update, April 2011

The MPC would like to inform its userbase we are currently working on the following areas:

NEOCP Handling: The MPC is working on the routines that generate both nominal orbits and uncertainty maps for the NEOCP. We ask users of the NEOCP to communicate with the MPC as to the success of these efforts. [...]

Question for all Observers – PLEASE READ!

An observer has asked us if we could publish a post every time the NEOCP gets updated. We wanted to know what you all thought of this idea and whether it would be useful to the community at large.

If it were implemented, you could expect a dozen or so “NEOCP Updated” posts per [...]

Don’t Write Posts without Body Text!

Dear NEOCP Blog users,

When publishing a post, please make sure to include some text in the body of the post (i.e., don’t just publish a post with a title). For some reason, posts without body text don’t always get delivered as an e-mail notification.

You needn’t write a long paragraph, a signature is [...]

UTC Stamp Added to Posts

Dear NEOCP Blog users,

I have now added a 24h UTC time stamp to posts, which is visible both on the main page and the individual post pages.

The date is set to display year/month/day. If enough of you complain that you prefer a human-readable form such as Mar 9, 2011 instead of 2011/03/09, [...]

Use of the NEOCP Blog

Here is a simple explanation of how/when to post on the NEOCP blog.

When you initially target an object, post something like this:

—Tim, obs code 696, is targeting 6YuAA43, 7:05 UT.

If you see the object in your frames, then perhaps a note saying that you see the object:

—Tim, code [...]
